Where
is Malta?
The Maltese archipelago, made up of Malta, Gozo, Comino and
two tiny uninhabited rocky islands of Cominotto and Filfla,
is situated at the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. These Islands
have no mountains or rivers, but a series of low hills and
terraced fields. Malta, the largest of the islands, with a
population of about 350,000 inhabitants, is a real treasure
trove of culture and heritage. The coastline is indented with
harbours, bays, creeks, sandy beaches and rocky coves. This
island may be reached by air or sea. |
History of Malta.
Malta has a long and varied prehistoric period, which dates
back to about 7,000 years ago. The megalithic temples with
their mystery of origin and purpose, the awe-inspiring fortifications,
the majestic temples and churches, all contribute to make
Malta a nation of rich history and pleasant surprises. One
of the first known people to settle in Malta were the Phoenicians,
who were eventually conquered by the Romans, until the division
of the Roman Empire. Then came the Arabs, who occupied the
Islands up to the 13th century, who were followed by the
Norman overlords, Swabian, Angevin and Aragonese dominations.
In 1530, the King of Spain, Emperor Charles V, granted the
islands on fief to the International Order of the Knights
of St. John of Jerusalem. The Knights administered the islands
for 268 years until 1798, when Napoleon Bonaparte drove
them from these shores and occupied the country in the name
of the French Republic. Following a brief occupation, the
French left Malta and in 1800, it became part of the British
Empire. In 1964, Malta attained its independence and ten
years later, in 1974, it was declared a Republic within
the commonwealth.
